A patient’s guide for Idaho Falls, Pocatello, Rexburg, and St. Anthony
Choosing an eye doctor means choosing someone you trust with your sight. Whether you need an updated prescription, have questions about your eye health, or want a practice that can care for your family over time, it helps to know what to look for.
If you’re searching for an eye doctor in Idaho Falls, Pocatello, Rexburg, or St. Anthony, where should you start?
As an optometrist in Southeast Idaho, I recommend looking at three things: whether the practice puts patients first, whether it can provide comprehensive care, and whether it values education. Here’s why each one matters.
Good eye care should fit into your life. Location, scheduling, communication, and the experience inside the exam room all matter.
Start with practical questions. Is the office convenient to your home, work, or school? Are appointment times compatible with your schedule? Can you easily contact the team when a question comes up?
At Summit Eyecare, we’ve chosen multiple smaller locations to bring care closer to our patients while preserving the personal feel of a smaller office. Our goal is to make it easier for families throughout Southeast Idaho to get the care they need.
We also offer early and late appointment options at select locations, along with phone, text, and email communication. Contact your preferred office for its current hours and appointment availability.
Convenience should continue once you arrive. You deserve time to describe your concerns, ask questions, and understand what your doctor finds.
We intentionally limit how many patients our doctors see so they have time to listen, examine, and explain. A helpful question to ask yourself after an appointment is: Did I feel heard, and do I understand what happens next?
An eye exam should consider your eye health as well as your glasses or contact lens prescription. When choosing a practice, ask how the team evaluates your concerns and what happens if your doctor finds something that needs a closer look.
At Summit Eyecare, we invest in diagnostic equipment so our doctors have additional tools available when a patient needs further evaluation.
That doesn’t mean every patient needs every test. Your history, symptoms, and exam findings should guide the recommendations. Your doctor should be able to explain what a test is for and how the results could affect your care.
The number of machines in an office is only part of the picture. Just as valuable are the doctor’s judgment, the explanation you receive, and a clear plan for follow-up.
Consider asking:
Can this practice evaluate the concerns that matter to me?
Will someone explain why additional testing is recommended?
If I need care elsewhere, will the team help coordinate the next step?
Look for a practice prepared to help when a routine visit leads to more questions.
Education matters on both sides of the exam chair.
For doctors and staff, that means continuing to learn, sharing knowledge, and improving the patient experience. Our seven doctors routinely meet to discuss patient care, technology, unusual cases, and ways to improve. We also provide ongoing staff education and training.
For patients, education means leaving with a better understanding of your eyes. You should feel comfortable asking what your findings mean, why a treatment is recommended, and what to expect next.
That commitment extends beyond our offices through Dr. EyeGuy, our eye-health educational YouTube channel. We’ve created hundreds of free videos about glasses, contact lenses, eye conditions, treatments, and common questions about vision. This channel has grown to be one of the largest Eye Health channels in the world!
